Make your lips EXTRA scrumptious with this DIY Pumpkin Spice Lip Scrub! It has natural lip plumping & reddening effects for soft, kissable lips!
Pumpkin spice season is upon us and it’s time to put it to maximum use!
One of the DIY beauty products I enjoy making and using is a DIY pumpkin spice lip scrub.
It features ingredients like brown sugar for a sweet delight that has tiny granules that won’t scratch up lip skin, extra virgin olive oil for softening and smoothing chapped lips, vanilla extract for nice flavor and scent, essential oils for a defined pumpkin spice scent and of course, pumpkin spice as the key ingredient to spice this lip scrub up!
Let’s see more benefits and uses of each ingredient, shall we?
Benefits of the Ingredients
✨ Brown sugar
A light and airy type of sugar, brown sugar has the perfect texture for a lip scrub! Avoid using white sugar which has larger granules/particles that may scratch up the thin and sensitive lip skin.
Brown sugar has a mild coarseness to it that helps gently but effectively scrape off excess dead cells from lips. It’s good for removing peeling skin from chapped lips this cold season.
This sugar also has great Fall/Winter vibes, which makes it super enjoyable. I’m sure you’ve stocked up on brown sugar for this season’s sweet and cozy oatmeal, cookies, hot chocolate and other breakfasts/desserts!
✨ Extra virgin olive oil
Extra virgin olive oil is probably in your kitchen cabinet right now.
It is very versatile and can be used in any DIY beauty product including this DIY pumpkin spice lip scrub.
Olive oil contains healthy fats that lubricate and moisturize the lips. Combining it with olive oil helps gently lift off dead skin from the lips without damaging them.
You could also use any other oil you may be having on hand! Good options including coconut oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil and jojoba oil, if you want to go with a non-edible option.
✨ Pumpkin spice powder
Pumpkin spice powder isn’t just the key ingredient in this lip scrub!
It not only adds to the delicious scent of this lip scrub but also has a lip smoothing, plumping and reddening effect!
That’s because it contains warming spices such as cloves, nutmeg and allspice, among others that increase blood circulation to the lips, making them redder in color.
It also has a mild abrasive texture with its fine powder particles that help exfoliate dead cells.
✨ Vanilla extract
Vanilla extract makes this lip scrub smell scrumptious!
✨ Essential oils
We shall be using essential oils of allspice, clove bud and cinnamon.
These are mainly added for their scent. You can do without essential oils in this lip scrub as they are potent and may not be suitable for all skin types especially if you have sensitive skin/lips or conditions like periodontal dermatitis, eczema and others.
However, I find that adding essential oils is what really brings out the ‘pumpkin spice’ scent of this scrub.
Plus, these essential oils are from spices that are warming in nature. When applied on skin (diluted of course), they give you a warm tingling sensation that raises blood flow to the surface of the skin/lips. This helps plump up your lips for a pillowy & cushiony lip effect PLUS this excess warmth also makes your lips look extra red.
