Both were used on participants with androgenetic alopecia. The study concluded that rosemary essential oil was just as effective a minoxidil. Furthermore, rosemary didn’t have any side effects while minoxidil brought about itchy scalp.

There is scientific evidence that peppermint helps promote hair growth.

Peppermint also contains a key component, menthol which improves blood circulation in the scalp, stimulating growth of hair. This property is also one of the factors that makes popular hair growth treatment, minoxidil effective.

Fenugreek seeds are popularly used in Indian cuisine.
They are a rich source of iron and protein – two main nutrients needed for healthy long strong and shiny hair.
Fenugreek also contains a mix of beneficial plant compounds including flavonoids and saponins. These substances are known to foster hair growth because of their anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal effects.

Anecdotal evidence shows that hibiscus is a powerful herb for hair growth.
It contains amino acids that produce keratin, a structural protein which is the building block of hair strands.
Keratin also improves hair elasticity which makes hair strands less prone to breakage. It also boosts the overall thickness of hair strands.
This study shows that both the leaves and flowers of hibiscus showed hair growth promoting activity.

Carrier Oils Used & Their Benefits
💛 Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is renowned for its hair care properties. It has been used in the Indian subcontinent as a hair growth oil for decades.
It improves your scalp and hair health which creates a fertile environment for hair to grow and thrive.
This 2003 study found that coconut oil was better at preventing protein loss than both the mineral and sunflower oils when applied either before or after the hair was washed.
This buttery white oil has a chemical structure made up of a medium chain fatty acid known as lauric acid. It gives coconut oil a long, straight structure which is readily absorbed into the hair shaft.
It also contains nutrients such as medium chain triglycerides, plant sterols, lauric acid, mystiric acid, palmitic acid and Vitamin E. It is high in healthy fats that do their best in coating, nourishing, hydrating and protecting hair.
Other benefits of coconut oil for hair that facilitate long lush locks include: fights fungal infections on the scalp, prevent split ends, calms an itchy irritated scalp and protects hair from heat damage.
💛 Castor Oil
Castor oil is another carrier oil purported to be the best for hair growth.
It has a thick slightly sticky consistency which is why it is being used in a smaller quantity and mixed with other carrier oils like coconut oil. Note: It can also be used on its own!
This rich thick oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that help prevent dandruff and scalp infections. It also has antimicrobial properties which keep out harmful bacteria and protect the scalp from diseases and infections.
Castor oil helps improve hair growth, treat split ends and helps with breakage.
What makes castor oil extra special for hair growth is its ricinoleic acid content which increases scalp blood flow, promoting healthier hair and growth while also cutting down on inflammation.
All of this suggests that castor oil can definitely aid in optimizing scalp health, which, of course, leads to healthier longer and thicker hair growth.
💛 Black Seed Oil
You surely must have heard about black seed oil for hair growth?
This dark colored oil is extracted through cold pressing of black cumin seeds also known as black seed and Nigella sativa seeds.
Science says black seed oil makes your hair grow longer and thicker. I mean, take a look at these studies:
This 2014 study showed that a mixture of coconut oil and black seed oil was effective enough in promoting hair growth to justify further study.
Furthermore, this 2017 study indicated that an herbal hair oil containing Nigella sativa (black seed) resulted in hair fallout reduction of up to 76%!
