This DIY aloe vera hair growth oil with fenugreek is a powerful nutrient-rich serum that is full of antioxidants, has a strong anti-inflammatory nature and uses ingredients known to help you achieve longer, thicker and healthier hair!
Hey loves! I have another hair growth potion for you this week – a DIY aloe vera hair growth oil, featuring an Ayurvedic herb: fenugreek!
That’s right! Fenugreek seeds are a secret remedy to boost your hair length by miles!
Aloe vera is known to be such a heavy weight when it comes to improving hair growth.
We shall also be using avocado oil as the medium to extract the goodies out of these key ingredients.
Finally, we shall be using rosemary essential oil, the super hero out of all essential oils for hair growth in particular, and bergamot essential oil which I used mainly for its beautiful citrusy scent but also helps with scalp/hair health!
Let’s take a look at how all these Nature’s wonders work in this recipe, shall we?!
Benefits of Each Ingredient
💚 Fresh Aloe Vera
This succulent plant is rich in Vitamins A, C and E, all of which promote cell turnover leading to healthy cell growth and shiny hair strands.
When applied on your skin/scalp, it acts as a great anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antioxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial agent.
It also contains Vitamin B12, C, E, folic acid, choline and other nutrients
that nourish and strengthen your hair, preventing you from losing hair while promoting new hair growth.
💚 Avocado Oil
Unlike other oils that sit on top of the scalp/hair and give it a greasy feel, without sinking in and providing the hydration & nourishment needed, avocado oil, due to its rich in oleic acid and monosaturated fat content, actually penetrates the hair shaft.
It is also quick to sink in, which makes one of the best nourishers for all hair types.
💚 Fenugreek Seeds
In the Indian subcontinent, fenugreek is one of the popular spices used in cooking.
Ayurveda, an ancient science that originates from this area, also uses fenugreek in medicine and remedies like hair growth oils and so on.
This comes as no surprise because just like aloe vera, fenugreek also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Plant compounds in fenugreek may interact with a chemical known as DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is a major cause of hair loss in men and women. DHT causes hair loss by attaching itself to the hair follicles. Consuming or applying fenugreek may help slow down the ability of DHT to attach to your hair follicles.
Studies have also shown that an herbal oil containing fenugreek extract can increase hair thickness and growth (source)!
💚 Rosemary Essential Oil
I always sing about the benefits of rosemary essential oil for hair growth. It is probably the best oil for hair growth and it has been proven to result in new hair growth on the scalp!
In a study with people with androgenetic alopecia, rosemary essential oil was more effective and presented less side effects compared to minoxidil, a conventional hair loss medicine (source)!
💚 Bergamot Essential Oil
I used bergamot essential oil mainly for its scent but it is also good for your hair and scalp!
Some of the benefits of bergamot essential oil for your hair and scalp include: conditioning & taming frizzy hair, protecting hair from oxidative damage, soothing an irritated scalp, controlling excess oiliness in the scalp, and increasing blood circulation which aids in hair development and growth, among others!
What You Need
- ¾ of a fresh aloe leaf
- 1 cup of fenugreek seeds (where to get it)
- 1 cup of avocado oil (where to get it)
- 7 drops rosemary essential oil (where to get it)
- 7 drops bergamot essential oil (where to get it)
- Glass dropper bottle (where to get it)
- Small funnel for transfer (where to get it)
- Small fine mesh sieve (where to get it)
- Induction safe pot (where to get it) & wooden spoon for mixing (where to get it)
- Induction stove (where to get it)
Directions
- If you have an aloe vera plant, carefully cut off one fresh leaf from the base of the plant, slicing it with a sharp knife.
- Next, rinse the leaf in lots of clean water to get rid of the yellow sap called aloin, naturally present in aloe vera. Aloin, also known as aloe latex, is a naturally occurring chemical present between the outer coating and inner flesh of fresh aloe vera leaves. It is a mild irritant to the skin.
- Pat dry the washed aloe leaf using a clean kitchen towel then slice the leaf into small pieces. The spikes may be removed because some sources say they can be toxic. You only need ¾ of the leaf. You can choose to store the other ¼ in the refrigerator or discard it because it’s the tail end of the leaf which contains little gel anyway.
- Now add the sliced aloe into a pot, add fenugreek seeds and avocado oil. Place the pot on the stove.
- Let the contents boil on medium heat for 15 minutes, then turn off heat, cover the pot and let it sit for one hour or until completely cooled down.
- Strain into a glass dropper bottle using a fine mesh sieve and a funnel.
- Your DIY aloe vera hair growth oil is ready!
How to Apply
- You just need to use this hair oil once a week to see results!
- To use, apply it all over your scalp and slather it on your hair length and tips.
- Tie your hair up and put on s shower cap and let it work its magic for 30 minutes.
- When the time is up, wash your hair as usual in the shower, making sure to shampoo twice to remove all oil residue. Condition, dry and style your hair as usual.
Tips
- Always do a patch test with any product before applying it on your body. You can rub a few drops of this oil behind your ear and wait for up to 60 minutes to see if you have any negative reaction such as itching, irritation, swelling or redness. Do not apply it on your scalp/hair if you experience any bad reactions.
- Since everything is heated to kill off germs and any water content, this DIY aloe vera hair growth oil will keep for a very long time. You may refrigerate it if you wish.
- If you are allergic to aloe vera, please do not use this oil.
- Essential oils are very potent so a little goes a long way. For every teaspoon of any product, it is recommended to add 2 drops of essential oil, which is a 2% essential oil dilution rate recommended for adults.
