What Exactly is Rosehip Oil?
Wait up! Before we even get into the gist of this post, we need to clear up something that people really get messed up – WHAT is rosehip oil?
Now rosehip oil does NOT come from the rose flower plant or bush we all know. It comes from another entirely different plant, the wild rose bush, whose scientific name is Rosa rubiginosa, or Rosa moschata.
The rosehip plant is native to South America, predominantly found in the Southern Andean mountains. Today, rosehip seed oil is also being extracted from another species of the wild rose bush which is Rosa canina, being grown in Europe, South America and other parts of the world.
Rosehip oil is extracted from rosehips and seeds using the cold press method. Rosehips are the red berry like fruits that grow on certain species of wild rose bushes such as Rosa canina, Rosa moschata and Rosa rubiginosa.
Even Out Your Skin: Rosehip Oil for Hyperpigmentation
Rosehips are said to be a well-kept secret of the ancient Chilean people who used these nutritious fruits for their cosmetic and medicinal benefits.
Yes, rosehips are actually very nourishing. They contain many powerful nutrients including beta carotene, linoleic acid, lycopene, omega 3 fatty acids, omega 6 fatty acids, omega 9 fatty acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin K.
What makes rosehip oil good for hyperpigmentation is the Vitamin K content. In the beauty world, Vitamin K is a lovely ingredient that is known to help with discoloration in skin. This includes:
- Dark circles under the eyes
- Blemishes
- Dark spots and marks
- Stretch marks
- Acne scars
- Freckles
- Scars
- Sun damaged skin
- Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation – A Beauty Distress
Hyperpigmentation basically describes skin that is darker in some areas.
Now, some people have hyperpigmentation naturally due to their skin tone and genetics. This includes things like darker knees, elbows, knuckles, etc.
If you have this type of issue, it is totally fine and part of your body. Remember, hyperpigmentation is not a harmful and not usually a sign of a medical condition.
If you have other issues together with the hyperpigmentation such as redness and burning, then you may need to consult a dermatologist to see what kind of treatment plan you can actually use.
On the other hand, those who develop hyperpigmentation due to sun damage, inflammation and scarring may want to try using natural remedies like rosehip oil because they have been proven to help reduce this kind of skin discoloration.

1. As a Moisturizer
If you like to keep your skin care routine as simple and short as possible, then you should try using rosehip oil neat as a moisturizer! A few drops spread lightly across your skin is all you need.
Remember rosehip oil has a thin ‘dry’ consistency so you can use it for all skin types except dry skin. For dry skin, you can apply a few drops of rosehip oil after you have already moisturized with your current/favorite moisturizer. Or, you can try my Hydrating Rosehip Elixir recipe below!
💖 Rosehip Hydrating Elixir: Fill a 4 oz amber glass dropper bottle halfway with rosehip oil, then top up with argan oil. Now add 3 drops of frankincense essential oil, 3 drops of carrot seed essential oil and 3 drops of lavender essential oil. Cap the bottle and gently roll it between your palms to mix everything together. Do not shake it as this will create air bubbles that will lead it to oxidize faster. Apply a thin layer every morning and night when moisturizing after you wash your face.
2. Dab it on as an Eye Serum
Say sayonara to dark circles and under eyes affected by hyperpigmentation with rosehip oil! As mentioned above, Vitamin K in rosehip oil is a master when it comes to lightening discolorations and making skin appear brighter. Here’s a beauty recipe for erasing those annoying panda bear eyes:
💖 Dark Circle Eraser: Using a small funnel, pour 2 tsp rosehip oil, 1 tbsp Vitamin K oil, and 5 drops arnica oil into an amber glass dropper bottle. Next, prick one Vitamin E capsule and squeeze out the oil into the bottle. Cap the bottle and roll it gently between your palms to mix the ingredients without creating too many air bubbles. Voila! Your dark circle eraser is ready! Gently dab just 1-2 drops underneath each eye using your ring finger every night before bed.
3. Use it for Oil Cleansing
Oil cleansing is a method of washing your face using a purifying and nourishing beauty oils. The concept is that the facial oil sinks into your skin pores and pushes out dirt, stale sebum, bacteria, pollution and other nasties. This naturally cleanses, purges and softens your skin.
Here’s an oil cleansing potion recipe you can make and use with rosehip oil.
💖 Oil Cleansing Potion: In an amber glass dropper bottle, add 2 tbsp castor oil, 1 tbsp rosehip oil and 2 tbsp grapeseed oil. Next add 3 drops of geranium essential oil and 3 drops of lavender essential oil for a heavenly mesmerizing scent! Close the bottle and mix up the ingredients. To use, apply a few drops of the blend onto your face first. Then get a washcloth, run it under hot water and gently dab/wipe your whole face to open pores and clean your skin. Repeat twice and voila! You’ll be amazed at your clean soft glowing skin.
4. Make a Nourishing Night Cream
Night creams are the best way to use rosehip oil because night time is when the skin rejuvenates and repairs its skin cells. Also, the treatment can sink in your skin undisturbed while you get your beauty sleep.
💖 Rosehip & Lavender Night Cream: In a large bowl, add ½ cup of softened raw shea butter, 1 tbsp rosehip oil and 7 drops lavender essential oil. You can soften the shea butter in the microwave. Do not melt. Now use a hand mixer to whip all the ingredient up into a cream. This may take 5-10 minutes. Scoop up the mixture into an amber glass jar and store in a cool dry place. Apply it on your hyperpigmentation areas or all over your freshly washed and dried face at night.
5. Use as a Light Makeup Primer
Soooo did you know that you can actually use certain beauty oils straight up on their own as a makeup primer? It actually works…
Rosehip oil is one of them. Simply spread a thin layer of rosehip oil on your whole face, and then apply your makeup as usual. The rosehip oil will not only keep your pores smooth and compact, making you makeup look flawless but it will also be healing and nourishing your hyperpigmented skin underneath! Double whammy! Go shine girl!
6. Make a Healing Face Mask
If you’re someone who doesn’t like any products lingering on their face, you can try a face mask which you just apply for 10 minutes on your face then wash off. Your skin will absorb the goodness from the face mask and help heal your hyperpigmentation areas. Here’s the recipe:
💖 Hyperpigmentation Healing Face Mask: Into a small bowl, dump in 1 tbsp of kaolin clay, 1 tsp of rosehip oil and add enough rose water to make a spreadable paste. Use your clean fingers or a face mask brush to gently apply the face mask onto your face or hyperpigmentation zones. Let it sit for 10 minutes undisturbed then rinse off with warm water. Splash your skin with cold water and apply moisturizer.
