Chlorella is a single-celled green fresh water algae. Sounds like a mouthful, huh? Let’s just say – it’s a great superfood that is a must-have for your hair care journey! Read about the benefits of chlorella for hair in this post below.
Chlorella – Must-Have Superfood Algae
You must have heard of chlorella before in the world of superfoods. It has many health benefits such as promoting healthy weight loss, supporting immune function and detoxing heavy metals from the body.
But did you know that it contributes to healthy lush hair as well? Let’s see some of the benefits of chlorella for hair below.
6 Amazing Benefits of Chlorella for Hair
1. Nourishes Hair Follicles
Chlorella has a remarkable nutritional profile! Firstly, it contains 50-60% protein, plus all the 9 essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein.
It is a rich source of biotin, iron, sulfur, vitamin C, chlorophyll, omega 3’s and fiber. Chlorella also provides potassium, calcium, copper, zinc, magnesium and folic acid.
All these nutrients nourish the body, including the hair follicles. This strengthens the hair follicles, keeping them strong enough to foster healthy hair strands.
2. Longer Locks
If you’re looking to grow your hair longer, then chlorella powder (or capsules) is a supplement that is recommended you take.
It is very nutritious with numerous vitamins and minerals, as seen from its nutritional profile in Point one above. These nutrients nourish the hair follicles and increase the hair’s growing phase which results in hair growth.
Chlorella also promotes blood circulation in the scalp which stimulates hair growth, since it contains B-vitamins that help create red blood cells that transport oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to locations like the hair follicles in the scalp.
Hair loss caused by stress can be reduced by chlorella because chlorella has the ability to protect immune cells from oxidative stress and its negative effects.
3. Thicker Hair
Thin hair is prone to damage easily and contributes to bald spots too! Adding a quality supplement like chlorella into your diet can contribute to hair growth and thickness.
Chlorella is said to stimulate the production of keratin, which is the major component that makes up skin and hair.
Take chlorella daily (I have a recipe with chlorella powder below), to promote growth of baby hairs and a full head of thicker locks.
4. For Glossy Hair
Is your hair dull and lack-luster? Then taking chlorella regularly can help with that. Chlorella has nutrients such as iron and nucleic acid that promote cellular regeneration. This revitalizes cells including those of the scalp and hair follicles. This promotes healthy looking hair which has a beautiful sheen.
When it comes to boosting hair shine, the MSM, content, which is a natural sulfur, in chlorella can help.
5. Prevents Hair Breakage
Chlorella contains B-vitamins such as vitamin B12, along with nucleic acids, chlorophyll, protein and iron that boost the health of hair strands from the cellular level. This creates the growth of thicker and stronger hair strands that don’t split or break easily.
6. Prevents Premature Greying
One of the fears anyone has when it comes to hair is premature greying! This study showed that deficiencies in Vitamin B12 can actually lead to premature gray hairs. It also suggests that the original hair color can return with vitamin supplementation.
Since chlorella is a power-house of nutrients including Vitamin B12 and biotin, adding it to your diet, may help prevent greying and hair discoloration, in addition to hair loss.
How to Take Chlorella Powder for Hair
There are two forms of taking chlorella – chlorella powder and chlorella tablets. Since chlorella powder has a taste that is a bit fishy, you may prefer the capsules or tablets.
However, for those who have chlorella powder, you can add it to a smoothie or, here’s a recipe that I take on a daily basis. You won’t even taste the chlorella in this drink!
Ingredients
- ½ tsp chlorella powder
- 8 oz warm water
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (with the mother) or fresh lemon juice
- 2 tsp organic honey
Directions
Pour all your ingredients into an 8 oz glass, mix together and drink up! How I take it is on an empty stomach early in the morning.
