Let’s face it – finding relief for irritable bowel syndrome can be so challenging. What I have found can provide at least some kind of reprieve for symptoms is having a warm cup of tea. Here are 5 soothing teas for irritable bowel syndrome.
5 Teas for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
1. Peppermint Tea
Sometimes something so simple like having a serving or two of fruit can have you bloated or worse for the rest of the day. This is so frustrating If you’ve been avoiding eating for as long as possible to help prevent IBS symptoms. Am I right?
Thankfully, a cup of steaming peppermint tea can offer help for bloating, inflammation, upset stomach, nausea and abdominal pain.
Drinking peppermint tea seems to have an extremely soothing effect on the stomach and intestines. You can also read about how to use peppermint oil (which is super helpful) for IBS in this article.
2. Black Tea
Now when it comes to IBS diarrhea, for me, black tea works well in curbing it.
Yes, it does contain caffeine that may be an irritant for some. However, black tea is actually FODMAP-friendly and may do you good.
A hot cup of strong black tea might help you find relief in IBS diarrhea or constipation.
3. Ginger Tea
Having abdominal pain or constipation-dominant IBS? Then ginger tea might just be your type of tea!
Ginger is well-known as a powerful anti-inflammatory and natural pain reliever. It is extremely useful for helping move sluggish bowels and promoting regularity.
Have a hot cup of ginger tea with a teaspoon of maple syrup for your evening tea.
4. Green Tea
Green tea is among the best FODMAP-friendly teas for IBS. Note: FODMAPs are small molecule carbohydrates that can irritate the bowel and cause IBS flare-ups.
It also has a whole host of other benefits including increasing dopamine, assisting in weight loss and fighting cancer.
All of these are attributed to its high concentrations of chlorophyll, antioxidants and polyphenols.
You can drink several cups of green tea a day.
5. Fennel Tea
Last but not least in my humble list of teas for irritable bowel syndrome is fennel tea.
Ground fennel seeds can be made into a tea to provide tremendous digestive benefits. Yup, fennel is good for digestion and it also relieves gas, bloating and intestinal spasms.
If you’re suffering from constipation, then fennel tea can help because it can relax intestinal muscles and offer relief.
However, fennel is high in FODMAPS so it may or may not be a problem for you. You can try it out in a small amount or let your doctor if you’re following a strict low FODMAP diet.
What I must say is drinking fennel tea after meals really helps with digestion which wards off most IBS symptoms.
Well, that’s it! Thank you for reading the article, ‘5 soothing teas for irritable bowel syndrome.’ I hope you find relief in a nice and warm cuppa!
