In the quest for finding a natural nutrient-rich oil for fading away scars, you may come across two prominent oils that stand out – tamanu oil or rosehip oil for scars. Which one do you choose? Are you in a conundrum? Maybe this article can help you in your dilemma!
We’ve all got scars at some point in our lives, be it scars from cuts, scrapes, burns or even acne scars. Your scar can linger around for a crazy long while and that’s what makes things frustrating.
Many people suffer from acne, which leaves pretty bad scars that come with craters/indents or hyperpigmentation.
You can try to naturally make these scars fade away faster using either tamanu or rosehip oils. Keep reading to reveal which ones you’d best use.
Benefits of Tamanu Oil for Scars
Tamanu oil, also known as ‘Green Gold’ because of its tantalizing beauty benefits and its yellowish-green color, originates from Polynesian Islands.
It contains powerful anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antibacterial and also antiparasitic properties.
This yellow-green oil is also rich in omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids including Stearic acid, Linoleic acid, Oleic acid, Palmitic acid and Calophyllic acid. It also contains a lot of Vitamin E, great for scars.
Ancient Polynesians took advantage of tamanu oil’s healing properties for treating bug bites, cuts, burns, scrapes and wounds in general.
Benefits of Rosehip Oil for Scars
Rosehip oil, a carrier oil extracted from rosehips of the wild rose bush plant, contains the following nutrients: beta carotene, linoleic acid, lycopene, omega 3 fatty acids, omega 6 fatty acids, omega 9 fatty acids and Vitamins A, C, E and K.
It is great for scars because of its rich fatty acid content (omega 3, 6 and 9!). It also contains Vitamin K, a nutrient well-known in the skin care world for its scar-reducing properties.
Because it speeds up cell regeneration, rosehip oil enables the darkened scar to fade away, bringing up fresh new skin from underneath.
So, Which is It – Tamanu Oil or Rosehip Oil for Scars?
As you can see from the quick facts provided above, it’s quite difficult to tell which is best – is it tamanu oil or rosehip oil for scars?
That’s because they basically have almost the same properties and nutrient content.
In my humble opinion and experience, I believe you can choose one of the two twin oils based on YOUR skin type and where the scar is located – is it an acne scar? Or a burn scar? You get the picture.
If you are dealing with oily skin and acne scars, then you would rather use rosehip oil as it is a ‘dry’ oil. When you apply it on your skin, it quickly sinks in and leaves a drier skin feeling rather than heavy thick oily feeling.
Furthermore, rosehip oil has a comedogenic rating of 1, which means if you’re dealing with acne scars then that means you’re also dealing with acne.
Comedogenic rating means a rating of 0-5 which shows the pore clogging ability of a substance, 0 being not pore clogging and 5 being very pore clogging.
Meanwhile, tamanu oil has a comedogenic rating of 2, which is higher than rosehip oil!
This is the major reason I suggest using rosehip oil for acne scars rather than tamanu oil.
When it comes to scars of other sorts, such as stretch marks, burn scars and scars from wounds, I recommend using tamanu oil because it has a richer content of fatty acids than rosehip oil.
However, it’s your pick! Because rosehip oil works for all the other types of scars too.
So…let me let you in on a tip – why not mix them both together?!
If you’re serious about this scar-reducing thing, then you’d get both of these oils and mix them together to make a super effective scar-be-gone serum!
This is what I prefer to do because I believe it grants faster results. I have even noted the recipe down below if you’d like to try it out:
Rosehip Tamanu Scar-Be-Gone Serum
This is to be used for scars like stretchmarks, scars from burns, scrapes, wounds and scratches. For acne scars, use rosehip seed oil.
Important: The blend below is a 2% essential oil dilution, which means every tsp contains 2 drops of essential oil. So in this blend we have 8 TBSP (24 tsp) of carrier oil which means we are adding 48 drops of essential oil. This is effective for scars in particular, and we are using it only on the scars – you don’t have to apply it over a large amount of skin. Remember, when using essential oils, less is more so do not add more drops.
If you want to use it as a serum for your face, use a 1% essential oil dilution which means 8 TBSP of carrier oil will need to have 24 drops of essential oil.
Always practice essential oil safety when using these concentrated oils.
What you need:
💛 4 tbsp tamanu oil
💛 4 tbsp rosehip oil
💛 12 drops lavender essential oil
💛 12 drops frankincense essential oil
💛 12 drops helichrysum essential oil
💛 6 drops geranium essential oil
💛 6 drops carrot seed essential oil
💛 4 oz amber glass dropper bottle
Directions:
- Get a 4 oz amber glass dropper bottle. Your blend is going to fit exactly to the brim of this bottle.
- Now using a small funnel, measure out and pour in 4 tbsp each of tamanu and rosehip oils.
- Carefully add each of the essential oils, drop by drop.
- Cap the bottle tightly and gently tilt it up and down to combine all ingredients.
- Your scar-be-gone serum is ready!
- To use, apply it only on the scar. Using your index finger and thumb, massage the scar in opposite directions from the center of the scar. This motion helps to break up scar tissue.
- You can use it once a day.
