Learn how to make your own DIY hyaluronic acid face serum for aging skin!
Hyaluronic acid serums are popular in the skin care world because they are ultra-moisturizing. Using one helps restore moisture loss from the skin. It helps reduce dry skin, fine lines and skin inflammation.
The main ingredient in this serum is hyaluronic acid, a molecule naturally present in our skin. It is responsible for retaining water and keeping the skin elastic, supple and firm.
Low levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin makes skin cells lose moisture and elasticity, which makes it look and feel dry, wrinkled and saggy.
Let’s take a deeper look at how hyaluronic acid actually works:
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like sugar molecule, naturally occurring in our skin. Its duty is to help skin retain its moisture levels which keeps it hydrated and plump.
What it does is attracts and binds to water molecules and increase the water content of skin.
In other words, it is a natural humectant – a substance known to draw water from the dermis (second layer of skin) to the epidermis (top layer of skin).
Benefits of Using Hyaluronic Acid for Skin
- It helps preserve the skin’s natural moisture levels.
- It is all natural – obtained mostly from bacterial fermentation and rooster combs. There are also vegan or plant-based sources of hyaluronic acid.
- It is all-natural.
- It is non-comedogenic which means it doesn’t clog skin pores, making it suitable for all skin types including sensitive and acne prone skin.
- Prevents pre-mature aging of skin, by keeping skin hydrated, supple and taut, which makes it less prone to wrinkles from dry skin.
- It helps in faster wound-healing
- It has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
Types Of Hyaluronic Acid
Another thing you need to know is that there are two types of hyaluronic acid.
- Low molecular hyaluronic acid: This type is split into small fragments that easily penetrate into the skin cells and encourage collagen synthesis. By boosting collagen, it helps keep skin youthful.
- High molecular hyaluronic acid: Here, the molecules are larger than low molecular hyaluronic acid which makes it harder to easily enter the skin. But, it forms a gel-like substance that helps lubricate the skin better than that of low molecular hyaluronic acid.
Both types of hyaluronic acid are good for your skin. You can choose whatever type you think suits your skin, or even use a combination. If using high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, your face serum will have a thick gel-like consistency to serum. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid which is below 800 kDa will not gel up like the high molecular weight one.
A 1.0 – 1.5 million daltons size hyaluronic acid gives a perfect thin gel serum-like consistency for making your DIY hyaluronic acid face serum.

- When the time is up, remove the container from the fridge and mix everything very well. You will see a transparent and gel-like serum forming.
